By Wendy Makara

Are you taking part in a 4th of July Trivia? How about you learn a thing or two and make this year really fun by showing off your knowledge.

So what do you need to do? First thing is, stop being embarrassed if you do not know much about American history, just read on and all will be revealed.

In my opinion, this book should be on every Americans book shelf. By reading this book, this 4th of July holidays could be so much fun. Your family and friends will be so impressed with your knowledge and you could make up fun stories to amuse the children.

The book is "Don't Know Much About History: Anything You Need to Know About American History But Never Learned", by Kenneth Davis. It is part of the "Don't Know Much About" series of books. Kenneth Davis is a popular American historian who lectures at well-known museums like the Smithsonian and The American Museum of Natural History and publishes in the New York Times and other newspapers.

The book tells American history how it really happened. From Columbus to Clinton, you will learn about the important historical events, but also discover the myths and misconceptions over the past 500 years of American history.

This is a great guidebook on American history which the whole family will enjoy. It is a well-resourced, quirky and amusing history book that presents American history in all its excitement, not the boring blah, blah, blah we ignored in school!

Welcome to the E: Gift-Giving Anew

By James Pynn

Though the economy is far from friendly these days, there are valuable lessons to be learned. For instance, less is always more and growing a little organic garden is a great investment. That being said, special occasions and birthdays never stop, even when buying gifts gets more and more expensive. This is where the power of the E Revolution comes in very handy.

To give more, you only have to give a little. Now, before your head explodes from trying to figure out this little oxymoron, let's talk about e-gifting. Affording bigger and better gifts is a matter of numbers. Everyone can afford that little bit that makes the massive gift possible. This means the more people involved, the better -- after all, it is a matter of numbers.

Giving gifts is not a new phenomenon, but group gifting via the Internet is. As the Internet continues to redefine out lives on a daily basis, it is significant that gifting has emerged as viable e-trend. Though Facebook and Twitter enjoy the lions share of the traditional medias attention, it should be noted that other web-based movements are in full swing. The chief among these movements is e-gifting.

Take, for example, a new Coach purse. This exquisite gift costs somewhere in the vicinity of $2000. To b sure, that's what most people make in a month -- if they're lucky these days. But, asking a group of people to gift together reduces the out-of-pocket costs dramatically. With 12 people involved, that $2000 square of fine leather only costs each person $167. Better yet, get 20 people on board and everyone only needs to pitch in about $100.

You designate a gift, in most cases something as extravagant as a new laptop or Coach purse or Armani suit, and then as many people to contribute towards it. It is a relatively straightforward endeavor: you give a gift to a selected friend, lover or relation. The difference is you can give bigger and better gifts than you alone can afford.

Looking For A Great Costa Rica Vacation, Try Jaco!

By Victor Krumm

How about going to a vacation spot that is known to have some of the best and most popular beaches in Costa Rica? If you have always wanted to vacation in Costa Rica, check out Jaco.

Jaco has long been popular because of its fun, casual and relaxed atmosphere, and many friendly people. More and more tourists from around the world have already learned of this fantastic place and travel to Jaco for its nearby tranquil, beautiful clean beaches and many things to do. And, it is easy to reach by car or comfortable, cheap, ubiquitous buses.

Over the years, many tourists have made this a favorite location for their visits, citing its casual, relaxed, laid back, friendly, party atmosphere. There are lots of great beaches nearby, some of which are very tranquil, all of which are gorgeous. Jaco has boomed over the last half dozen years or so. Where there was once a quiet little road (except at night) road through town, today there are towering high rises and resorts, and lots and lots of bars, restaurants, and shops.

College kids have long traveled to Jaco because of its "party beach" and cheap accommodations. There is great surfing and lots of bars and discos. They are joined by people of every age and background who come here to enjoy the many things to do and see. Today, there are many restaurants, taverns, tourist traps, and nightclubs to choose from. Whatever your budget, from luxury to basic (think hostels without hot water) there's a place for you----not to mention a tourist souvenir shop.

Though the beach directly in front of Jaco (Jaco Beach) has been very popular for many years, it is surpassed by nearby beaches (literally just a couple of miles/kilometers away). These beaches have fewer people and are some of the most ecologically pure in all of the world, bearing Blue Flag certifications for cleanliness. In particular, I recommend spectacular Hermosa Beach, just a couple of miles from Jaco. It is pristine and has some of the best surfing on the planet. In fact, in late July professional surfers from more than 35 countries are going to descend upon Hermosa in the days for world surfing championships---and party at night in Jaco.

Costa Rica is one of the smallest countries in the world but it is world-famous for its many places to go and things to do. When you vacation at Jaco, youll be close to innumerable activities. Head over to one of the fabulous volcanoes. Go windsurfing at Lake Arenal. Learn to surf. Visit fabulous Corcovado National Park, described by National Geographic as the most biologically intense place on earth. Take your life in your hands and bungee jump into a deep gorge just outside Jaco. Zipline through tropical forests, whitewater raft, go sea kayaking. Or just lay back and enjoy the beach and romantic sunsets.

And, if you like to fish (or want a new experience), take a day charter from Jaco. The waters are often teeming with wonderful fish, from 400 pound marlin to sailfish, schools of tuna, and dozens of other species. Costa Rica offers some of the worlds great off-shore fishing and remember: the worst day of fishing is better than the best day of working.

Christopher Columbus discovered and named Costa Rica 500 years ago, yet every day people discover new wonders while visiting this marvelous country. Though it makes up only about 1/10,000 of the land surface of the planet, there are more species of butterflies here than on the entire continent of Africa combined! One-fifth of every species of plant and animal on earth is here.

Are You Always Disappointed By Your Holiday Photos?

By Peter Dawson

You know what it's like. You go on holidays. You get to see some stunning sights and go to some fantastic places. You take lots of photos, but when you get home you're always disappointed at how dull, lifeless and ordinary your photos look.

You wanted to convey so many things in your photos. That special sunset. That light that just turned the view into something special. And that moment when you took that delightful smile on your girlfriends face. Except that when you view your photos none of those things are there.

It's not that you've done anything dumb like putting your thumb on the lens, you know better than that. You've invested in a good camera, you've spent some time learning how it works, and you really thought that you ought to be taking good photos now.

But every time you look at your photos you're disappointed in the result and wonder why you aren't taking better photos. They just don't convey what you wanted them to convey.

It's often a simple step to go from taking ordinary photos to taking good photos you can be proud of. You don't need to go to College for years, you just need to learn some simple basic processes that every photography professional knows.

Like how to go about composing a good photo. How to use the light to best advantage. How to take some good photos of people. How to take pets, and outdoors. How to use a tripod. How to use your flash properly.

There's no doubt that modern cameras are very good. They take good photos if you know how, but don't expect to just point and shoot and get a great result. It's still necessary to know how to drive one of those modern cameras to make best use of them. You need to know some photography basics. No camera will take great photos if you just point and shoot.

Now of course if they could make a camera that would take great photos every time just with point and shoot they would, the market would be huge. But the person behind the lens still needs to learn some photography basics.

I'm not saying it's hard, just that there are some secrets of the pros that you need to learn and practice and apply them to take great photos.

Then when you go on holidays next time you won't need to feel embarrassed about your average boring photos. You'll love showing them to your friends, they'll probably be asking you for tips on how to take good photos themselves.

And you'll be pleased to see your girlfriend smiling your photos too.

I've written a book about how to take better photos, you can get it on my website.

An Amazingly True Dog Story: The Life & Death Of Thor

By Rick London

I had just started my very first online offbeat cartoons and funny gifts venture, and stopped immediately my daily creative routine. Having grown up in rural Mississippi, I was used to the hot muggy afternoons which often brought tornadoes and rain. Thor was about twelve years old but was staring at the walls and not responding to my voice. He had been very active up until then. I got him to the veterinarian within ten minutes and the diagnosis was some rare ailment that dogs that age often get similar to seizures and he must be put down. I had been a dog lover and owner since age four. My intuition made me skeptical of the veterinarians conclusion instead I decided to keep Thor comfortable for a few days at home. Once Thor was resting I urgently began searching the Internet for alternative solutions and discovered Dr. Ian Billinghurst an Aussie author/vet/surgeon.

Within a few days, I located an Australian holistic/but also allopathic (traditional western medicine) veterinarian surgeon named Dr. Billinghurst, who had written a controversial book titled Give Your Dog A Bone. It entailed a diet plan that was basically raw foods, bought at the grocery preferably organic. The special recipe contained lots of raw meaty bones and occasionally a blend of vegetables, raw burger, etc. in a blender. I discovered that raw organic tripe is one of the most perfect foods for domestic animals. The first time I fed Thor a raw chicken wing, I was mortified. I had heard all my life this was the surest way to kill a dog, but I was desperate. I could already see and feel his soul energy fading. Oddly enough, he immediately took to this new diet, after not eating at all or drinking very much water for three days. I switched his water to bottled and ordered herbal tinctures and live flash-glanced vitamins with live minerals as well. He was devouring these raw foods, from hamburger to raw chicken to broccoli to watermelon (and a blend of them all).

Slowly, very slowly, I could see him coming back to life. The biggest problem was the terrible odor and coloration of his stools and urine for the first month. Dr. Billinghurst warned me that would happen. The toxins of commercial pet food were leaving his system. One morning, about a month after beginning Thor on the B.A.R.F. (Bones And Raw Foods or Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods), Thor jumped on my bed, something he had never done prior to the diet. He was wagging his tail and ready to go out and play. He grabbed his leash and was ready for a walk. He didn't want a short walk but was willing to go with me my usual five miles. He kept up with me without even panting or having a shortness of breath. The vet had also advised me that in addition to the mystery disease, Thor also suffered from level two heart diseases. I started giving him the same herbs I was taking for my heart disease such as hawthorn berry and very hot cayenne tincture. I stopped all vaccinations as advised and bought homeopathic nosode vaccines ordered online from an only pet care service in California. His daily diet also consisted of fresh organic fruit and vegetables (and occasionally yogurt mixed in a blender. He loved it all and devoured every meal like a wolf in a hen house, whereas in the days of feeding him commercial dog food, even the best, he approached it with great disappointment and rarely finished a bowl (usually left it less than half-finished).

I later learned this shouldn't have been a surprise at all. According to Dr. Billinghurst and now other experts on the subject of B.A.R.F., dogs digestive systems have not evolved very much from their earlier days, before domestication, when they were still wolves, just as cat's systems had not since they were lions. Thor's energy level kept growing and growing as did his wanting to be near me and play at every given chance, whereas he used to mostly lay around and sleep during his pre-barf days. Up until age twenty, he continued to greatly enjoy our walks, usually three to five miles. It was only when he was about twenty one, that his phase two heart disease changed to phase four, and I knew that was dangerous. It was only then, almost a decade since his last vet visit, except for checkups, that I was forced to also use allopathic medicines, such as Lasix for his heart. I did so very hesitantly, as I was aware this type medicine would eventually hurt his liver and kidneys, which of course it did. In his final year, he had several near-death experiences in which I rushed him to the vet. I was already resolved that if he were in any kind of discomfort, or his quality of life was compromised, I would sadly have my best friend put down. The vet insisted he would not put him down. After all Thor had made three major comebacks at age twenty-two which he considered nothing less than a miracle. After a final try of a body flush, I could tell he was almost gone. I asked the vet what to do. He said to take him home, there was still a chance. I knew there was not. I could see his life and soul fading from his eyes. I knew him too well. He had been by my side, by my desk at home where I work, for a decade. I said I would take him home but I ordered a bottle of morphine which I administered around the clock as I slept on the floor cradling him during his final night. I had to put the morphine pill down his throat and set my alarm clock for every three hours so as to wake up and give him another. On the 6 am alarm, I opened the bottle to give Thor his pill, but his soul had left his furry body. I looked down and saw there was no breathing. Any pain he may have experienced was now gone, but tears flooded from my eyes. I looked at his face carefully and he was still smiling. He always had a smile through life, and now it stayed with him in death. I will never forget his beautiful smile.

It was snowing heavily outside, icy, and it was hard to carry his almost forty pound body up the hill. He had a favorite hill behind our home where he chased birds, squirrels, eagles, chipmunks, rabbits and every animal imaginable. I built a small casket for him and a headstone. I had a shovel in the other hand. I lay him down in the casket, and begin digging, first through the snow and ice and finally through the hard dirt until the hole was about four feet deep. I lay him in it, said a prayer, and filled it cold and shivering and still crying. I carefully placed the coffin in the ground and filled it up. I placed the headstone. It's epitaph read, To Thor: A Special Dog Who Brought Only Joy & Happiness To All. Loved and missed more than he will ever know. Your best friend, Rick

Over a year has passed since I buried him. The grieving process took longer and was more intense than I had calculated lasting nearly six months. Friends were suggesting I go immediately to the shelter and adopt another. I could not do it then but now I know I will one day. It is after all what Thor would have wanted. I can only thank the Lord, nd thank Dr. Ian Billinghurst the Father of B.A.R.F. and Shirleys Wellness Cafe, for giving my best frien and I another another wonderful (vet-free) decade together. Although one veterinarian had decided it was time to "end his life" at age 13, in reality, time for Thor to begin living. Thanks to the B.A.R.F. diet, Thor lived a long and healthy life.

The Awe Inspiring Sunshine Coast

By Mike Dosei

To escape from the reality of what we knew, we took a vacation to look for what was once lost - the scene of the coast rapidly approached - The Sunshine Coast.

It has been years actually since I was a kid that I was there. It offers so much more than I remembered or even imagined. In addition to the endless sunshine - which of course is a given, the area caters to all ages and interests.

This year my whole family decided to spend our time at the Noosa. That was a time to remember, and for boys the time of teenage romance. They engulfed their time surfing the curl and showing off their bodies to the teenage girls at the beach. The waves were such a spectacular site; the mounds of sandy castles, we took a multitude of pictures to share throughout the years.

The littler ones loved the time we spent at Underwater World and yes of course we did get a big wet kiss from Maddy one of the seals. Listening to my daughter squeal with delight at being so close to these beautiful animals was truly a moment to remember. Yes we did buy the pictures (at an extra charge I might add - but totally worth it) the look on her face was priceless - definitely a keeper!

During one of our trips my brother and I went to the regional golf course and we were able to sneak in not 18 holes of golf but 36. The only reason we played another round was because it was so much fun the first time around.

The girls, which included my wife and sister in law, seized the day by canvassing the shops and boutiques and purchasing several local souvenirs for our family back home.

The Sheraton Noosa with its rare north beach was the place we decided to lay our heads each night. The rare north beach was protected by the headland and was an awesome area to swim, surf, and spends time with family and friends.

The Sheraton Noosa also had amenities that everyone could enjoy from spa treatments to the pool. The spa treatments of course, were loved by the ladies. The kids enjoyed watching the dolphins from the shores of the beach as well as swimming in the shallow waters of the ocean. When it came to the huge pool, which we spent many hours enjoying, we thought our children were going to sprout gills.

With a drink in hand, the sunset was enjoyed at the Noosa River, which was the way most evenings ended on the Sunshine Coast.

So to sum it up: sunshine golf seals & dolphins shopping surfing spa

Honestly, everyone had an exhilarating time and their interest were typified by the ultimate vacation destination. Personally this group is not easy to appease and all in all it was a wonderful vacation.

If you havent been on a vacation and you are ready to get away then head to the Sunshine Coast and you will remember to go on more vacations to the Sunshine Coast.

Why People Larp

By David Borg

A variety of people, both men and women enjoy LARPing. LARP stands for Live Action Role Playing, and there are many different forms of this activity. It may be a strictly controlled gaming scenario, or just a casual gathering of historical reenactment enthusiasts. Either way, there are a number of people who enjoy these kinds of games.

Those who enjoy LARPing the most tend to be extremely imaginative and theatrical people. They generally enjoy the times of medieval days, and/or fantasy genre. Most people who enjoy LARPing often find it easy to spend time in these reenactments because they often share common interests.

A role playing game is a way to become someone else. It encourages players to come out of their shells, shed some of their natural shyness, and speak up on whatever is on their minds. A LARP can make them feel more confident and give them the venue to express their ideas or feelings without fear of ridicule (well, without much ridicule, anyway).

Reasons that some of these people like LARPing is that they consider it a sport that they can win. Some just enjoy playing with others who do as well. Most players are similar in that they are very imaginative and creative and want to share stories they have in their minds with others like them. It is a chance to show someone ideas that they have and be accepted by others who do the same thing.

Other players enjoy LARPing that is based on the stories they enjoy reading, or other RPGs they played in the past. It is a good way to escape from the humdrum day-to-day life and become a part of the literature they've always liked.

LARPing is a way that people can involve themselves with their favorite fantasy stories. Those that have a passion for the fictional stories can become so immersed in them that participating in a LARP can make them feel like they belong there. It is like knowing the characters and the settings of the stories and being able to create that world and be a part of it.

In most cases you will find three distinct types of players: the dramatist, the gamer, and the immersionist. The dramatist enjoys the acting within any scene, the gamer gets finds interest the battles, and the puzzles, and the immersionist tries to maintain the fully authentic feel of the story.

Overall, many people like LARPing and find a great deal of enjoyment from acting out different roles in different settings from stories of different genres. It's a great way to lose oneself in a character or story.

Choosing the Perfect Costume for Halloween

By Phil Sikes

The first step in making your Halloween celebration an exciting event is choosing a theme for your costume. For example, you can dress up to be sexy, terrifying, or glamorous. Or, you can wear a different theme to each party you attend.

The location of the party has a lot to do with your choice. Office parties usually call for more modest costumes, while your best friend will probably be expecting you to go all out for his party.

After choosing a theme for your costume, head to your local costume shop and make it happen.

You will have to decide to rent or outright purchase your costume. Normally, it is not difficult to find a well priced costume. Looking on the Internet, you can usually find a great costume at a great price. While renting is efficient, since you might not want to wear the same costume every Halloween, finding a good price may make it just as cost effective to buy one.

Costumes become truly great when attention is given to their details. Details are also what will allow you to maintain anonymity while wearing your costume.

A spooky monster mask might create a decent illusion, but spending the time and effort to use real theatrical makeup will make the illusion at lot more effective. With a little extra effort, nobody will be able to recognize you.

When deciding where to buy your costume, be it on the Internet or in a local shop, make sure the store offers everything you will need to make your costume perfect, just the way you want it. If a shop doesn't have the items you want, keep looking.

The shop you decide to buy or rent from should sell accessories and makeup to go with the costume. If you spend time working on the details of your costume, it will be a disguise you can truly be proud of at this year's Halloween parties.
